House Tour Part 3: The After Photos!

Finally, I’m ready to show you our house! Check out part one for the before pictures, and part two for a few shots of the renovations in progress. These photos were taken just as we were moving in.

The living room with its newly gleaming floors was painted in Benjamin Moore Whispering Spring. It’s a really soothing light muted blue. As you’ll see, I tend to go for dreamy pastels. I don’t know, I like dramatic colors in other people’s houses, but for myself, I just really like airiness and natural light.

I changed out the weird primary colored knobs that were on the fireplace built-ins for these simple clear glass ones. I like changing hardware, since it’s simple, cheap, and makes a big difference. And we were all about simple and cheap by this point.

We painted the built-ins, so no more pea green drawers. The dining room walls are painted the same color as the living room. Since the rooms are connected by a large open doorway, it made sense to paint them the same color.

The kitchen was painted Benjamin Moore Irish Mint, which is a nice bluish minty green, and all the cabinets were done in Simply White.
That big open hole in the wall is this really weird, deep shelf thing. It kind of sucks, because the fridge has to go in that corner, so it partially covers it. I’m planning to sew a curtain to cover it for now.
The back stairwell area is Wedgwood Gray. We still need to paint the trim back there. The yellow trim isn’t sticking around. We did manage to sand and paint the banister, though! The stairs were refinished/replaced as needed, so no more weird fake wood peeling up.

The hallway is painted in Benjamin Moore Cloudy Gray, which is actually a paint we had leftover from our apartment in Oakland. It’s pretty hard to tell here, but it’s a very very light dusky purplish-grey. The weird chandelier thing came with the house. It has plastic flowers on it. (?!?)

And this is my new dressing room! Because it’s an old house, the closet space is pretty minimal and there’s really no other place to keep my clothes. And with the bedroom being small and having lots of windows, there’s no other place to put my dresser. So a dressing room it is! I painted it Benjamin Moore Ecru, one of my favorite wall colors ever. We also had this color in Oakland. It’s a very light warm pink that is extremely flattering. Even though it’s not toally set up yet, it feels so relaxing to dress in here in the morning.

Finally, our bedroom. It’s hard to choose, but this might be my favorite room in the house. There is just so much beautiful sunlight in here all the time, and the doors out to the garden are amazing. I love seeing trees and flowers when I wake up.

Thus concludes the tour! I didn’t include the basement, since we haven’t been able to do much with it yet. I’m sure I’ll have more to share!

wow! your home is BEAUTIFUL! you picked some wonderful soft colors, and a dressing room? that’s great! i also really love those built ins! great job!!
Thank you! I wish the colors were easier to photograph! I agree, built-ins are wonderful.
Such a cute house! I love that it still has its wood windows (or at least some from what I can tell in the photos), those are usually the first to go. Built-ins are one of my favorite features in houses from this era, nice work with the colors and re-painting!
And how cool that you have your own dressing room :) And French doors that lead out to the garden from your bedroom? Yay! Definitely a happy home.
Some windows are new, but the ones in the front of the house are old casement windows that swing outward. They are beautiful, though not cat proof. And to paraphrase our inspector, “quite charming, but drafty.”
What a transformation! Your color choice has made it much more bright and airy. Looks beautiful and good luck with the rest of your renovations!
Thanks! It really does feel like a different house. It feels much bigger now.
Fabulous job! Love the colors, love the house.
Thank you! Now to begin the long process of decorating…
Wow! Everybody lives in a flat in my city, so cute American houses like yours seem simply dreamy… Even better when it’s part of a before and after! I think I’ll show it to my mom who is an hardcore handywoman (hm, that sounds weird, is it English?), she even restored the floors at our place (definitely risky).
Do you plan to write a ‘part 4′ with furnitures?
I will definitely write more about the house as we get it set up. Most of our furniture is in place, but we still have boxes of stuff everywhere. I think it will take us a while, but there will be a lot more to come.
oh my goodness, I LOVE your house! it totally could be my house with your color choices! I always use a light blue/gray/lilac type color. it’s so soothing and airy, but still elegant and sophisticated. gorgeous! congrats!!!
It’s so beautiful! You guys did a wonderful job with the renovations and I am absolutely loving the built-in kitchen features!
Lovely! The blues you used are very much like the one I used in my bedroom, Behr’s Himalayan Mist.
About the casement windows, they can be weatherized to be less drafty and can also incorporate window screens to protect the cats. I have six-foot tall casement windows in my bedroom that were fixed a year ago and they are now so draft and sound proof that after you hear the closing suction sound you cannot hear a single thing from outside, even in thunderstorms!
good to know, Lisa!
Oh, Sarai! You guys did such a beautiful job with the renovations! Thank you so much for posting about this and listing the colors that you used. I am getting ready to repaint one of the rooms in our condo, and your post is definitely an inspiration to me (I love your taste, always). It’s nice to have the hard work of painting and remodeling mostly behind you, so now you can move on to the fun stuff of decorating!
I live in an hold home in st Paul and have a dressing room too!! You will love it!!!
I love a peek into a persons world like this. Your color choices are great. I hope to see it furnished and decorated as well.

Beautiful!
If you wanted a more permanent solution for that weird closet/cabinet in the kitchen, you could make an accordion door of two wood slats that hinges outward in a V (and hung on the left side). Depending on how much the fridge covered that area, the door should be able to slide in and out, because it would not have to swing out. Or, you could hang sliding closet doors, but you’d probably need custom sized ones. But you could make an accordion door easier yourself I think… the tricky thing would just be where to put the handle where you could reach it easily.. at the extreme right, the fridge would block it.
I have a closet just like that in my new apt.. it’s even elevated off the ground too. I think it used to be a dumb waiter.
What are you doing for cabinet fronts? Did you paint them white too? Are you putting the original ones back or installing new ones?
We thought about doing something like that with the sliding door closet in our bedroom. I think you could put a handle near the center of the door, where it hinges in the middle, and pull it out from there. I still fear that anything we do there will look weird!
We painted the cabinet doors white too, we just haven’t put them up yet. I think we’d like to redo the cabinets and counters eventually anyway.
That weird hole in the wall used to house a refridgerator, I’m pretty sure. You could open it up to be able to fit a modern-sized one.
Beautiful home, by the way! You’ve done a beautiful job so far!
It looks that way, and it is possible if the stairs underneath were added later. The “hole” doesn’t go all the way to the floor… you can kind of see in the photo that the stairs are directly underneath. That’s the main thing that would prevent putting a fridge in there now.
Oh– the colors are gorgeous! So soft and dreamy. What a transformation, I can’t wait to see how the spaces look when you’ve added your furniture and settled in.
I am just so impressed and inspired by the changes you made to your new house! The paint colors are all such great choices and really play up the natural lighting in the space. What luck too that there was hardwood flooring underneath everything in most of the house! I do hope you’ll be showing us pictures of the decorated space going forward–I know I’d love to see them! :)
I LOVE your house! I love old houses that have all those wonderful built ins! So many nooks and crannies to store things. And your color scheme is perfect for the house.
And I even love that little chandelier thing with the plastic flowers. It looks perfect in your old house, it adds to the charm. We found and old chandelier to hang in our bedroom (albeit with glass flowers), perhaps you repaint it to match your hallway? Would that help?
Congratulations!
Your new house is wonderful and I love all the work you have done.
I was wondering who would end up buying that cute, little house – I’m glad to see it went to someone who would appreciate it. Welcome to the neighborhood!
Sarai, I finally got a look at your pictures. You guys put in a lot of work and it looks absolutely wonderful! I love the house and what you did with it and can’t wait to see it in person–probably later this summer.
Oh, Sarai, it’s perfect. Really wonderful — congratulations! We used Wedgewood Gray and some of the surrounding colors on those BM paint chips throughout our house recently and they are just perfect, aren’t they? Every single day I wake up and think, “This color is grea/thank gosh I’m done painting.” (And then I remember I still have one more hallway to do. Bleh.) But anyway, it just seems like the things you’ve done to the house are the things that are so very *meant* for the house. Lovely.
Wow, you guys have done a wonderful job! The house looks so much…fresher now. You must be so excited to be decorating too!
xoxo

Thanks! We are, but I must say it’s a little overwhelming. So many things to do on a limited budget! I need to do more blog posts to get my thoughts in order. :)
The bones of this house are so, so beautiful. I love all the soft pastels you’ve chosen, I love the built in (even better now it’s all white) and I love the French doors!
As someone who is renting a horrid little room in London right now and is getting overwhelmingly broody for her own house, I’m ever so jealous. :)
impressive to say the least! it’s so nice when someone sees the potential of a small diamond in the rough. i love the character this house had already & the charm you gave it! mad props!
