Only a paper moon

paper moon photo

I am fascinated by this set of paper moon photos on Flickr. What a collection! There’s something really interesting and powerful about seeing these kinds of staged photos in a large group like this, don’t you think?

Whoa, what an amazing collection. What’s really odd is that some of the people look so serious.

I have been dying for years to do a similar photo with a paper moon! Ever since I first discovered this style of photo, I loved the whimsy!

Amber says:

I LOVE this and especially your idea of displaying them all together.

When I was 9, I sang in a talent show wearing a long Wendy style “nightgown” with a giant, glittering paper moon hanging behind me. I sang the swinging on a star song. “Would you like to swing on a star–carry moonbeams home in a jar–and be better off than you are–or would you rather be a…” (insert various animals for different verses). My girl scout troop all had costumes and played the other parts in the song while I sang. Man I wish I had a video of that!! These types of gorgeous old photos have always reminded me of that night.

I was delighted to see a collection of these photos. I happen to have one of my ancestors and her friend’s picture made in front of such a fanciful backdrop. I did not know why it was chosen, but I see that it was probably somewhat popular. Thanks for sharing.

Those are delightful (although I have to agree that some of the people look quite dour). It would be fun to stage photos like this–maybe I’ll do so with my kids.
