me

I’m Sarai. I love all things hand made: food, clothes, art, anything. My current fascination is with pattern drafting, textile design, silkscreening, knitting, and other fiber arts.

I’ve been sewing for a very long time, and it’s really my first love. I still remember the first garment I ever made; it was a dress made from a tube of green fabric, draped and ruched along one side, and held in place with a sheer white scarf that wrapped around the neck. I made it for my little sister, and somewhere my parents have a photo of her in it, striking a “model” pose. I must have been about 8 years old. There are a lot of other things I remember too, dresses I’ve made and hats I’ve found and jewelry I’ve been given. These things stick in my mind.

The knitting came a bit later in life. One Winter, my sewing machine broke down completely and a new one was on backorder, so in the meantime I decided to take up knitting so I could make a few holiday presents. It was mostly something to keep my hands busy and I really didn’t think I’d get into it, but boy was I wrong. Nowadays I’d be hard pressed to choose between knitting and sewing.

I’m also generally very interested in the political and social implications of fashion, and even more interested in the personal impact clothing makes on our lives. In particular, I’m fascinated by the links between clothing and memory, and clothing as particularly meaningful and telling artifacts of our lives. I don’t think adornment is ever frivolous, as long as it’s thoughtful.

Oh, and I currently live in Oakland, CA with my fella and two cats of exceptional beauty and charm.
