A rosey spring dress

I bought this odd 80s sun dress for a few bucks recently. I thought it was really dowdy in that sort of horrible laura ashley way, but at the same time, the bodice is really beautifully cut. It has a very fitted princess cut, elastic shirring in panels at the back, and I like the crazy pockets. And recently I’ve had a bit of a textile crush on these kind of faded flowery large scale grandma patterns.

So I chopped a good foot off the hem and it’s really a new dress. The perfect thing to wear to the nursery this weekend and bake a cherry tart.

It even sort of matches the flowers we bought at the farmer’s market this week.

It’s definitely not “Laura-Ashley-ish” anymore! You look stunning :)
Gosh, that’s a flipping yummy dress!
This dress looks so fresh!
Wow–what a difference a foot makes! I’ve had similar luck with a polk-dotted summer dress from the 70s. Maxi-no-more.
wow the after effect is amazing
Thanks everyone! Hopefully the weather will soon be warm enough that I can wear it often.
It’s amazing how cutting a foot off really changed the whole shape and spirit of the dress – definitely a trick I’ll be putting in my pocket for later!
My wedding dress was made from a Laurel Ashley pattern. It was all eyelet, and I fashioned everything else, for mine. This dress is awesome! would love to get one in a sixe 20W, with a black or gray background for the print.
This dress is totall awesome! And I like eyelet dress as well.
Not sure the hacking a few inches of a hem constitutes ‘making’ something!
Huh? Where did anyone say I “made” this? Just pointing out that shortening a skirt on a thrifted dress can make it more wearable.
Oh my good lord, I had a dress just like this in a fabric not too far off from this one! It was my favorite and I miss it. *sniffle*
Agree that shortening it makes it tons more awesome, though.
(yay google image search bringing this up at random…sorry for the 3-years-late comment)
