Handmade Wedding: The Dress in Detail

All of my recent sewing time has been dedicated to working on my wedding dress.

It’s nearly complete now. I just need to sew the shoulder straps together and hand sew some of the lining to the dress. I’ll have pictures when it’s done, as it’s one of those dresses that looks completely different on a human form than on a hanger.

The fabric is a gold 4-ply silk charmeuse from the wonderful Britex in San Francisco. The pattern is an older Badgley Mischka for Vogue, which can be seen in this blog post. The gorgeous pearl-beaded trim overlayed on the fabric is from Lacis.

I decided to do a scalloped hemline to match the edge of the trim. It’s really my favorite part of the dress.

And this is a vintage purse I picked up at the Alemany Flea Market a long time ago. I pulled it out of my stash of vintage purses after I bought my fabric and realized that it is a near-perfect match! So I’m going to use it instead of making a clutch.

wow, gorgeous dress! you are lucky to be so talented AND to have the figure for this outfit! I’m also a little tiny bit jealous that you can DRIVE to Britex and Lacis :-) I grew up in the Bay Area, but live just a tad north now. Fairbanks, AK; which is about a 3500 mile drive. dang.
congratulations on your dress; it’s gorgeous!

Your dress is beautiful! I can’t sew, so being able to make something so special is amazing to me.

Edie: That would be a long drive to get to Britex, but it’s almost worth it. ;) It’s so pricey, but I just melt at the notions floor, with all that color sorted ribbon.

Brandi: You should try it out! It’s pretty easy to get started if you can learn the basics of a machine.

and the buttons… (drooling) I’m mostly a crazy quilter, so scraps and buttons/trim/ribbons/etc. make me swoon :-)

For me, it’s the ribbons and the silks.

I was recently in NYC and stopped by the Tinsel Trading Company. If you’re ever there, check it out, you’d probably like it very much! I wish I’d taken a few pictures, they had some amazing trims.

Fabulous! The fabric, color and trims are really beautiful. That’s so great that the purse worked out to match so well.

Yes, the purse matching was really serendipitous! Finally my stockpiling of fancy vintage evening bags has paid off. ;)

Wow. I just found you via Wardrobe Refashion and your dress/hat are stunning. I hope that your wedding rocked, because clearly you do!

hy,
you look gorgeous in the dress.i am looking for that special something for my wedding…and that special something is YOUR WEDDING DRESS.
unfortunately in Romania I can-t find special fabrics, and i do not know if ordering via internet is a good idea:(

I love it. You are very talented!!!

Trends are fun, but they should serve as inspiration rather than rules that must be obeyed. ALWAYS do what you really want (if it’s in your budget). Do it with joy, style and personal flair, and it will be appropriate. And who knows–you could be the start (or revival) of another trend!

i want a wedding gown, hand made to measure.
